Green praise for Nicosia mayor

THE Environment Commissioner yesterday praised Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou for the Municipality’s stance on environmental matters.
Charalambos Theopemptou told the Mail that a meeting with the Mayor and the Municipality’s Environmental Committee Council, “went extremely well.”
The Commissioner explained that there were several issues on the agenda.
“We discussed procedures and practises to be followed for the improvement of municipal parks and green areas and this will make it easier to secure donations from private companies that wish to promote corporate, environmental responsibility,” he said.
“Also on the table was the legal responsibility of the Municipality to inform the public on environmental matters, such as air quality.”
Theopemptou also spoke of a recycling project in collaboration with the Education Ministry, whereby old books and papers will be collected and recycled.
“To this end, the Municipality will donate several trucks which will go and collect the material and take them to the recycling company.”
The Commissioner described the Mayor as, “keen on all these ideas and is somebody who is forward thinking. I was very impressed with the work that she is doing.”
