 Public consultation on the Review of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Directive (Directive 85/337/EEC on the assessment of the effects of certain public and private projects on the environment, as amended)

Target group(s) 
All citizens, stakeholders and organisations involved in environmental impact assessments (of plans, programmes or projects) are invited to respond to the public consultation. The Commission is equally interested in getting the views of National Parliaments, Public Administrations (at national, regional and local level), the European Parliament and the Council, the Social and Economic Committee and the Committee of the Regions, as well as other institutions such as the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Period of consultation 
From 28.06.2010  to 24.09.2010

Objective of the consultation 
The objective of this public consultation is to collect opinions on: 
- the overall view on the functioning and effectiveness of the EIA Directive, 
- the need to amend the EIA Directive,
- the possible policy options for review, 
- the areas to be improved / amended. 
The internet consultation will assist the European Commission in the decision-making process, together with other sources (e.g. experience of the Commission, advice of a group of national experts and findings of relevant studies to be conducted) when considering options for the review of the EIA Directive.

We welcome contributions from citizens, organisations and public authorities through the online questionnaire.

It should not take more than 30 minutes to fill in the questionnaire. The maximum time to complete the questionnaire allowed by the system is 90 minutes. Partial responses will not be saved. This means once you start filling in the questionnaire, you have to answer all compulsory questions to submit your response.

View the contributions
In the interests of transparency, organisations have been invited to provide the public with relevant information about themselves by registering in the Interest Representative Register and subscribing to its Code of Conduct. If the organisation is not registered, the submission is published separately from the registered organisations.

Results of consultation and next steps
The Commission will take all contributions into account and will publish a summary paper on the environment public consultation website. 
Contributions received in reply to the consultation will be published on the internet at the Commission's website. Publication will be regarded as acknowledgement of receipt of your contribution by the Commission. If you do not wish your contribution to be made public, please indicate this clearly. In that case, your reply will also not be mentioned in future documents that may refer to this consultation.
